Spring 2007
FOR 11TH & 12TH GRADE STUDENTS WHO:
Have an Interest in Ecology, Nature, Health and the Environment
Want to Learn More About Plants and Animals that Thrive in New York City
Enjoy Learning Through Hands-On-Experience
Have An Inquisitive Mind and Want to Learn How to Positively Impact the Environment
Conducted by Professor David Rosane, chief naturalist for Nuture New York's Nature, Inc., who has worked for ten years in the jungles of South America for Cornell University as an instructor and researcher in ornithology and tropical ecology, and currently directs a humanitarian outreach program for the indigenous Ye'kuana people in southern Venezuela.

The 28-Hour Workshop has two parts:
1.
Five (5) Classroom Sessions at Kingsborough on Fridays from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m.
• March 23 - Session 1: Required Orientation, Registration, Workshop Introduction, Trip Directions, Distribution of MetroCards
•The Four classroom sessions on April 20, April 27, May 11 and May 18 are devoted to researching an environmental problem on the web and making a PowerPoint presentation about how it can be improved.
2.
Four (4) Field Work Sessions on Saturdays from 9:00 - 1:30 p.m.
Rain or shine, the class will meet at a starting point in the field at each of the following sites:
• April 21 - Inwood Park in Manhattan
• April 28 - New York Harbor/Battery Park in Manhattan
• May 12 - Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in Queens
• May 19 - Mt. Loretto Sanctuary, Staten Island (Bus transportation to and from Kingsborough Community College in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn will be provided.)
This is a UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY to explore the world you live in with a professional naturalist as your guide. You will LEARN TO SEE the nature of New York City and INCREASE YOUR UNDERSTANDING of the impact your actions have on the environment that surrounds you. Each workshop participant will also have the opportunity to DEVELOP A PROPOSAL THAT DEALS WITH AN ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM in his/her community.

REGISTRATION DIRECTIONS
1.
Complete an application and turn it in at your College Now office so that it can be faxed to Kingsborough. You must also call the College Now Webmaster, Ms. Pearl Dauber 718-368-5170 to indicate your interest.
2.
To secure a seat, the first 25 students who reply must attend a required workshop at Kingsborough Community College on Friday, April 20, 4:00-6:00 p.m., in a room to be announced
