SUMMER AT SEA SCHEDULE
June 12
4:00 - 6:00 pm
2-hour required open house at Kingsborough Community College, 2001 Oriental Blvd., Brooklyn, NY. CANCELLED
June 26
2:00 - 4:00 pm
Complete the registration and orientation process at Kingsborough Community College; receive MetroCards, Books, photo ID
July 2 - August 2
9:00 am - 2:15 pm
34 hours of classroom instruction in principles of oceanography
37 hours of oceanography lab work aboard ship & shore-side
23 hours of boat handling
13 hours of study with a tutor (optional)
10 hours of field trips
3 hours of Chat-and-Chew luncheons with maritime professionals
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Learn to sail a sloop-rigged sailboat and pilot single engine utility vessels
Field trip to SUNY Maritime College in Throggs Neck, NY
Tour several boats moored in New York Harbor and meet the crew
Meet aquarium directors and sea captains
Learn to splice lines and tie knots used in seamanship
MetroCard provided free-of-charge & Daily $5 lunch voucher
TO BE ELIGIBLE, YOU MUST:
Be entering the 12th grade in a NYC public high school in September 2007
Have a GPA of 75% or higher
Show evidence of a strong interest in Maritime Technology by submitting an essay explaining why you want to enroll in the program. The essay should be, preferrably typed, double space, no more than 2 pages in length
Be committed to spending four days a week from 9:00 - 2:15 pm at Kingsborough from July 2 through August 2
Be prepared to go outdoors in all types of weather and provide your own waterproof footwear and outerwear, notebook and pens
Submit an application, copy of high school transcript and signed parental trip consent form by Friday, June 8
